Orangutans are classified as frugivorous (fruit-eating), it makes orangutans play vital role in rainforest ecology to distribute the seeds. Orangutan also known as an  umbrella species, which means by protecting them effectively protects, other plant and animal species living in its forests are protected as well, like insects, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals.

There are multiple threats to orangutans. Habitat loss, illegal hunting, and forest and peat fires are just a few of the threats against the orangutan. The killing of orangutans in plantation area by human who see them as pests. Indonesia has one of the highest deforestation rates in the world. In every year, at least 1,2 million ha of the rainforest have been used by human activity (illegal logging, large-scale of habitat clearing, agricultural, mining and settlements expansions). Orangutan habitat has declined by more than 80% in the last 20 years, if main threats to orangutans are not addressed in a serious, urgent and sustained manner, they can lose their food source and their home.

People depend upon on forests for our survival, from the air we breathe, water and food source. Orangutans also play a significant  role in forest regeneration. As a frugivorous, after the seed passage through orangutan guts, it excreted at various locations throughout the forest, then it will germinate and grow into a new tree almost everyday. Orangutans also help open up the forest canopy by breaking off branches (ex. To build their nest) and creating gaps. This allows light to reach the forest floor, which helps the forest to regenerate naturally. Good management between forest and Orangutan conservation will help economic opportunities for local communities in tourism development.

Conservation of forests and Orangutans is necessary, because of the increasing number of threats to orangutans and their habitat. Public awareness related to the importance of protecting the environment and the orangutan as an umbrella species needs to be done. In addition, through awareness, law enforcement and campaigns may also help wildlife and biodiversity conservation.Therefore, We have to take a bold action to rebuild a connection with Orangutan and its habitat because we needs forest and forest needs orangutan.
